But now that I officially tried it, I can't stop adding salt to all my desserts. It's really weird, but it is so good. I might actually get around to the whole salt-on-watermelon thing this summer.
It all started with a recipe I can't tell you about right me because I'm going to post it soon, but lets just say, it took the veil off my eyes and opened a world full of salt.
My sodium intake will probably double and my doctors will probably roll their eyes every time they see me, but that doesn't matter because - oh, their eyes are already back in their heads when I show up. (I'm only half kidding. I get hurt and sick - a lot - in the randomest ways. My doctors love me.)
Anyways, salted chocolate. What an easy way to upgrade! And it coats our popcorn, making it irresistible. I threw in some coconut, because coconut is plain good and I really like coconut and chocolate, but also to add some texture and chew to the popcorn. My mom, who really isn't a big fan of coconut, gave me the mock groan when she saw it, but after a handful, decided that this was really good and it was ok that there was coconut.
Salted Chocolate Coconut Popcorn
Recipe Source: The Sweet {Tooth} Life
Yield: 4-5 cups
1/4 cup unpopped popcorn kernels (yields about 4-5 cups)
1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
1 teaspoon oil (coconut, canola, or olive)
3/4 cup coconut
Sea salt (I used about a tablespoon, but adjust to personal preference)
Pop your popcorn. (An easy way is to place your kernels in a brown paper sack and just microwave for 90 seconds. Easy, oil free popcorn!) Then, melt your dark chocolate with the oil. To do this, place your chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl and drizzle the oil over the chips. Microwave for one minutes, stirring every 30 seconds. Drizzle over the popped popcorn. Stir in the coconut. Sprinkle on the salt. And now you can eat and enjoy!

Oh, what a snack! I can tell you right now that I wouldn't be able to stop eating this because I love salted chocolate! I never make popcorn, and that needs to change. Great idea using coconut oil, too!

DeleteWow my mom and I just made a batch of carmel popcorn it was gone sooooo fast that as soon as it was gone I wanted to cry! It seemed like every five minutes someone was eating popcorn. I'm not a big fan of coconut but since your mom liked it I might have to try this.

ReplyDeleteI looooooove sweet and salty. How dorky of me but the only sweet and salty treat I really used to indulge in was chocolate covered pretzels...I never thought of salted caramels and salted bark, until it became the latest fad in the baking world.
LOL don't go overboard Mary Frances!!!! It's all about moderation...I know, I know, easier said than done ;p
I've tried salted watermelon, but tbh not THAT crazy about it. It's an acquired taste, and I like my fruit cold and in their natural form.
Anyway, I love this simple yet delicious snack.

DeleteOh goodness -- this looks dangerous. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'd have absolutely no control if you placed a bowl of this popcorn in front of me. Sweet and salty is one of the best combos there is, and I just discovered the amazingness that is sea salt on chocolate a few months ago -- it was love at first taste.

DeleteUm I love easy recipes and especially recipes that involve chocolate and popcorn! I am totally a salty sweet fan too but honestly I try to keep away because otherwise I will eat ALL THE THINGS. Salted caramel ice cream? Take it away. Salted chocolate chip cookies? UGH. Chocolate pretzel anything?! I'm drooling. Have you ever had Harry and David's Moose Munch? I think that's my favorite "candy popcorn" on the planet.

DeleteSalt in baking is so key! Funny thing about my family is that we are all obsessed with popcorn. We eat it almost every night. What happens is one person airpops some and then the smell wafts through the house and the next person goes and makes some and eventually everyone is eating popcorn! I feel like I consistently smell like popcorn haha
